She was only on the floor for a couple of minutes

Here is my quick sketch of Samantha at Houndstooth Coffee. They have the best coffees in town, really. Samantha is one of the baristas at Houndstooth, and she is sweet to everybody. She’s part of my clan – the club of small people. She wasn’t on the floor that day, there were already four people working the front. She had come up front to talk to Sean, the owner for a few minutes. She was standing with her hands in her pocket, and the eyes of her elbows facing outward. I hope that you can tell that.

Here is another sketch from my sketchbook, that I did of the punk rocker at SpiderHouse. I’m planning on going out this week for some “live” painting, so stay tuned. The photo was taken in my back yard several years ago.

Several years ago, I took pictures of some of my daughter’s high school friends. They had joined the school’s “Enviro Club”, only to find out that it meant cleaning up the leftover trash in the cafeteria. We all had a good laugh, and it lead to me thinking about a painting series (which I usually avoid). I wanted to capture some of that idealistic thinking that is unique to kids. I never proceeded.

I had some time to kill in the studio because I am prepping for some “live” work at a fashion show. I ran acrosss one of the photos, and decided to bang out this painting. I hope that you like it. More “live’ work very soon!

He was complaining to his agent

I’ve been working; some of you may be wondering. I have formed an art club with three artist friends that I worked with at Les Amis almost 30 years ago. At our weekly meetings, we have been going to Spider House, and drawing for 4 to 5 hours. They are not into painting, so I have been drawing with them “live”. It is good; we need to keep our hand and head healthy with this fine practice. So, instead of not posting at all, I have decided to post one of my many sketches that I have done with my good friends,  Lauren and Julie.

This guy was sitting in one of the broken gliders, discussing some issues with a very large Hispanic man. He must have been the punk rocker’s agent, as I overheard him complaining about another band member “Strangling my style”.

She was working at Halcyon, in the corner booth.

She was sitting at Halcyon, working on her computer. She was very well-coiffed, and knew how to pull together accessories. I’ve never been into that level of fussiness, but this woman made it look effortless. She was obviously very smart. I figured that she must be a lawyer, but who knows… Love her unabashed brandish: her red hair in the rust ensemble and chunky necklace.  Very powerful statement.

Christiana was with me the day that I painted this young student

Christiana and I ran into each other on one spring morning.  I told her what I was up to, and she decided to drive me to JPsJava to paint.  She had just bought a pristene white Mercedes at a thrift store (the truth), and was happy to drive me over there.  Anyone that knew Christiana loved her way of finding a bargain.  It was a clear spring day with a fast clip to the air.  The students were in finals, so the coffee house was packed.  We found a table, and I quickly painted this young,  college student.  She brought along one of her brother’s sketchbook journals from the 70’s, and we went through it together, page by page.  It is a beautiful memory.

I had deleted this post after over a hundred viewings, since I realized  that  people were coming over thinking this was a newsite.  I received a comment from a reader who knew Christiana, and requested that I put the post back (see comment on Pacha post below).

I have reopened the comment section so that those who wish, may leave their personal stories about Christiana here.  I keep getting many views on Christiana’s memorium, so my gutt is telling me that many of you have something to say.  I cannot tell you how much she has changed my world-view; it would take its own blog.  Let’s just say, that “here’s the thing”…
