Surf’s Up and so is the collar! He was at Epoch Coffee just long enough for me to paint a quick 6×9 portrait vignette. When I do these quick vignettes, I always try and tone the canvas a bit to keep the painting from looking too flat.
5-7 minutes? Amazing! It takes me that long just to mix the first couple of colours that I think I need – and to find out that I’ve got it wrong…again!
I have my colors all layed out, and I try to keep my mixtures down to two at a time. Remember, these are ABBREVIATIONS of a subject, and when you are doing a sideview, the most important shape to get right INTERNALLY is the “profile line” – which runs from inside the corner of the eye, the side of the nose, and the corner of the mouth. The OUTSIDE is defined by massing in the head, and defining the browridge, nose, and mouth. If you have indicated most of this with masses, very little line work is necessary.

Great work Lavanna.
Well done Lavanna. I am curious to know how long it took?
Hi, justwilliams.
After toning the canvas, it took me in between 5 and 7 minutes.
Thanks for stopping by!
